MIAMI - A 14-year-old student was killed in a middle school restroom Tuesday, and police said another student is a suspect in the fatal attack.

Jaime Rodrigo Gough, a student at Southwood Middle School, was cut with a sharp object and bled to death after students entering the restroom found him injured about 8:30 a.m., before the start of classes, Miami-Dade School spokesman Mayco Villafana said.

A police officer assigned to the school and faculty members rushed to the restroom, but Jaime died before medical aid could arrive.

Miami-Dade police Director Carlos Alvarez said the boy suffered "severe trauma" from a "cutting incident." He said authorities recovered the weapon and took a student into custody.

No charge had been filed as of Tuesday evening. Alvarez said search warrants were being issued in the investigation.

Police would not provide further details on the attack or release the suspect's name.

Students were confined to their classrooms with their teachers as a precaution for most of the day and were sent home at their normal dismissal time of 3:40 p.m. More than 150 parents gathered outside the school during the day.

Southwood is a magnet school of 1,500-plus students, specializing in visual and performing arts.
