Tigers' second-half rally levels short-handed Cards

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rodney Carney scored 19 and keyed a second-half rally, helping Memphis upset No.6 Louisville 62-58 Wednesday night.

The short-handed Cardinals lost their second since coach Rick Pitino returned from a two-day medical leave. They had won 16 in a row before falling to Marquette.

Louisville (16-3, 6-2 Conference USA) played without injured starters Francisco Garcia and Taquan Dean and reserve Nouha Diakite. Garcia, the team's leading scorer averaging 15.8 points, was out with a groin injury.

Memphis (15-4, 6-2) overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half and won its sixth straight. The Tigers shot 39 percent but had four players in double figures.

Louisville was up 52-47 with nine minutes left before Carney hit a pair of 3-pointers. He scored eight during a 15-3 run that put the Tigers ahead 62-55 with 30 seconds left.

NO.4 PITTSBURGH 71, ST. JOHN'S 51: Chris Taft scored 15 to help the Panthers get their school-record 17th home win of the season. Pitt (21-1, 7-1 Big East) has won 39 consecutive home games and is 33-0 at the Petersen Events Center. The 7-1 conference start is its best ever. Carl Krauser, who grew up in the Bronx but was not recruited by the Red Storm, had nine points, nine assists and seven rebounds. The Panthers, who have held 15 of their 22 opponents under 60, forced St. John's (5-14, 0-8) to commit 18 turnovers.

NO.11 TEXAS 76, COLORADO 63: Sydmill Harris and Kenton Paulino each scored 13, and the Longhorns hit 11 3-pointers. Texas (15-3, 6-1 Big 12) won its first game in the Frank Erwin Center since its 25-game home winning streak was snapped Jan.24. David Harrison scored 18 to lead the Buffaloes (12-7, 4-4), who outrebounded the Longhorns 38-31 but committed 18 turnovers that Texas converted into 19 points.

NO.14 WISC. 80, MINN. 66: Devin Harris scored a career-high 38 for the Badgers (15-3, 6-1 Big Ten), who won their 25th straight game at the Kohl Center and broke a school record with their 21st straight conference win at home. The Golden Gophers (8-12) fell to 0-8 in the conference despite getting 24 points and eight rebounds from freshman Kris Humphries. ... Wisconsin guard Maurice "Boo" Wade was arrested on charges he choked a 19-year-old woman, and the team suspended him indefinitely.

N.C. STATE 73, NO.16 WAKE 68: Marcus Melvin had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the host Wolfpack rallied from an 18-point deficit. Julius Hodge scored 18 for N.C. State (13-5, 6-2 ACC) and Scooter Sherrill added 16. The Wolfpack improved to 11-0 at the RBC Center. Justin Gray scored 15 of his 17 in the first half to lead the Demon Deacons (13-5, 4-4), who have lost five of seven since an 11-0 start.

NO.22 OKLAHOMA 75, IOWA ST. 48: De'Angelo Alexander scored 17 on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range to lead the host Sooners (14-4, 4-3 Big 12). Lawrence McKenzie hit 3s on back-to-back possessions early in the second half to spark a 21-5 run. The Cyclones (13-5, 4-3) lost their 20th consecutive conference road game.

VA. TECH 69, NO.23 PROVIDENCE 57: Bryant Matthews scored 23 and Coleman Collins 21 to help the host Hokies snap a five-game losing streak. Virginia Tech (9-10, 2-6 Big East) beat a ranked team for the first time since topping No.18 Connecticut 95-74 on Feb.5, 2003. Providence (14-5, 5-3) committed 21 fouls and had 19 turnovers.

NO.25 S. CAROLINA 90, ALABAMA 82 (OT): Josh Gonner scored 22 and Kerbrell Brown added 16, including a 3-pointer with 21.1 seconds left that sent it to overtime, for the host Gamecocks (19-3, 6-2). South Carolina hit four of its first six shots in overtime, while the Crimson Tide (11-8, 3-5) committed three offensive fouls and missed three free throws and a 3-pointer in its first six possessions.

NO.2 STANFORD: Backup power forward Matt Haryasz will miss tonight's game against Arizona State because of an ankle injury. The 6-foot-10 sophomore was to start in place of Justin Davis, out at least three weeks with a bruised bone and partially torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

NO.17 N. CAROLINA: Tar Heels recruit JamesOn Curry was arrested on drug charges, Alamance County officials said. He faces two counts each of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana; sale and delivery of marijuana; and possession and selling and delivering a controlled substance on school grounds.
