TALLAHASSEE - Florida State's six-point loss to North Carolina gave Duke coach Gail Goestenkors a bad feeling about Wednesday night's game with the Seminoles.
Shante Williams helped confirm her fears.
Williams had 20 points and eight assists to help the Seminoles upset second-ranked Duke 80-74 Wednesday night, ending the Blue Devils' 51-game winning streak in ACC play.
"I think they've been waiting to have a game like this," Goestenkors said. "I was very concerned that they were ready to break out and they certainly did."
Trinetta Moore added 15 points for Florida State, which ended a four-game losing streak. The Seminoles (11-10, 4-6) hadn't beaten Duke since Feb. 8, 2001 - also Florida State's most recent win over a ranked team.
"I think our attack was tremendous, it didn't let up," Seminoles coach Sue Semrau said. "That was the difference between the game here today and at Carolina."
Mistie Bass had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Alana Beard scored 22 for Duke (17-3, 8-1), which committed 16 turnovers - including a costly giveaway in the final minute.
Bass' 3-point play with 46 seconds remaining brought Duke to 74-73, and the Blue Devils then forced a turnover to get the ball back with a chance to reclaim the lead.
But Ganiyat Adeduntan's steal with 38 seconds left led to a layup by Lauren Bradley, and the Seminoles margin was no smaller than two the rest of the way.
"I thought Moore and Bradley worked really well together," Goestenkors said. "Having those two inside caused a lot of problems for Carolina (on Sunday) and they certainly did for us tonight as well."
Tasheika Allen and Bradley had 14 points apiece, and Ronalda Pierce added 10 for Florida State, which shot 57.4 percent. It was a season-high shooting percentage allowed by Duke, which limited 13 of its past 15 opponents to less than 40 percent from the floor.
Duke led 54-51 with 12:40 left, but the Blue Devils went nearly six minutes without a basket and lost the lead for good. Beard's layup with 6:10 left tied it at 60, but the Seminoles responded with a 7-1 run over the next two minutes.
