A judge granted a protective order valid for three years against Keyshawn Johnson on Friday, making it illegal for him to come within 100 feet of a man he threatened in Oakland.
John Mahannah, the former boyfriend of Johnson's ex-wife, Shikiri, received several threatening phone calls from the Bucs' estranged receiver after a confrontation at a funeral Jan. 9.
Johnson later apologized for the threatening phone calls, saying Mahannah was interfering with the couple's attempt to reconcile. Mahannah had received a temporary restraining order against Johnson that was extended in a hearing Friday before Alameda County Superior Court Judge Julie Conger.
Mahannah was denied a motion for attorney fees. County law enforcement officials will not charge Johnson in the case.
"He was happy about the results of the hearing, he got what he wanted," said Mahannah's attorney, Lisa Alex-Holland. "He's pretty upset about the decision not to prosecute (Johnson) in Alameda County. He feels like if that had been him, they would've charged him. But nothing happened because it's Keyshawn Johnson."
She said Mahannah is considering filing a civil lawsuit against Johnson, seeking damages for emotional distress. Johnson was unavailable for comment.
BUCS HIRE COACH: The Bucs hired Ole Miss assistant Ron Middleton as tight ends and assistant specials-teams coach, completing the staff shakeup.
Middleton, who played nine seasons in the NFL for the Falcons, Redskins, Browns and Rams, served as an assistant during the Bucs' 2003 training camp as part of the league's Minority Coaching Fellowship Program.
Art Valero, who has coached tight ends for two seasons under Jon Gruden, will coach running backs.
Middleton will assist special-teams coach Richard Bisaccia, whose unit finished at or near the bottom of several categories last season.
