Gladding perfect for UF softball

GAINESVILLE - Senior Jenny Gladding pitched the third perfect game in school history Saturday, leading the UF softball team to a 3-0 victory over Missouri in the GRU Classic.

Gladding struck out 12. The previous UF no-hitters were thrown by Chelsey Sakizzie in 1997 and 1998.

Kristen Butler's sacrifice fly scored Mylin Prieto, and Michelle Diaz doubled home Melissa Zick in the bottom of the first for the Gators. Freshman Lacy Howard added a homer in the sixth.

Earlier Saturday, Florida (3-1) got a three-run home run from sophomore Lindsey Cameron and a run-scoring double from Mandy Schuerman to down Arkansas 4-3. Gators freshman Stacey Stevens retired the first 13 batters and struck out 13.

Also in the GRU Classic, Leigh Ann Ellis tossed a complete-game, two-hitter for USF (6-1) against Missouri (1-2) for a 3-0 victory. ... Jessica van der Linden tossed a complete-game shutout, and Elisa Vasquez had three RBIs as FSU defeated Louisville 8-0 in the Seminole Classic. FSU (2-0) also downed Illinois State 11-3, with Vasquez picking up two more RBIs.

BASEBALL: Ben Harrison homered and had four hits and four RBIs in host UF's 14-0 victory against Gardner-Webb. ... Host Arizona State got three runs in the ninth to down Florida State 10-9. ... Host Georgia College & State swept Tampa 11-0, 5-4.

FOOTBALL: The architect of Florida A&M's move to Division I-A resigned as interim athletic director. J.R.E. Lee III submitted his resignation to school president Fred Gainous on Friday, SID Alvin Hollins said Saturday. ... D.J. McCarthy was hired as Central Florida receivers coach, replacing Sean Beckton. McCarthy had been at Nevada. ... Colorado suspended linebacker Chris Hollis, offensive lineman Brian Daniels, offensive lineman Jack Tipton and cornerback Sammy Joseph for next season's opener against Colorado State. Hollis was suspended for taking a recruit to a strip club and the other three for violating team rules, including one alcohol violation. ... Former Mississippi State running back Dontae Walker, 23, will go to trial May 4 in Starkville, Miss., on two felony drug charges stemming from his arrest on a traffic stop last summer.

TENNIS: Host FSU triumphed against UCF 5-2. ... In Coral Gables, Miami rallied past USF 4-3.
