The trainer who spoiled Funny Cide's bid for the Triple Crown had the fastest horse again Saturday, when odds-on favorite Medaglia d'Oro won the $500,000 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park.
Medaglia d'Oro took the lead from pacesetter Predawn Raid on the far turn and won by 43/4 lengths. Funny Cide settled for third, 33/4 lengths behind Seattle Fitz, in the field of eight older horses.
The Kentucky-bred Medaglia d'Oro has finished first or second in 14 of 16 starts, including 10 in a row.
Funny Cide hasn't won a stakes race since back-to-back wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. The gelding failed to become the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years when he lost to Frankel's Empire Maker in the Belmont.
