LARGO - A man who shot his friend in the chest last week while the two were exchanging a .45-caliber handgun was arrested Saturday on charges of manslaughter, Largo police said.

Gregory Carl Harris was being held Sunday in Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail in connection with the death of Matthew Cales.

Cales, 24, and Harris, 26, were looking at Harris' handgun at Cales' home in the 3500 block of Sixth Avenue SE on Friday.

When Cales handed the gun to Harris, it went off, striking Cales, police said. Harris was holding the gun when it fired, police said.

Cales, who was hit in the right chest, was taken to Largo Medical Center, where he later died.
