LEESBURG - Newsome, a first-year school with no seniors and seven freshman starters, showed a lot of poise Tuesday in holding off Leesburg 1-0 in a Class 4A contest.
While the Wolves (14-1-2) are young, coach Kathy Dodd said they are far from inexperienced.
"Fortunately I have a lot of club players from our area," Dodd said. "And I don't really consider them freshmen anymore."
Newsome scored about seven minutes into the second half when Danielle Joyce's shot from about 30 yards went over keeper Danielle Bynum's outstretched arms and under the crossbar.
"I thought we played real well in the first half, we just couldn't find the goal," Dodd said. "We finally got it in the second half. Then we kind of sat back on our heels a little bit in the end and thankfully we held them out."

Bloomingdale edged
STUART - Martin County needed 24 minutes to grab the lead for good against Bloomingdale, then spent the rest of Tuesday's Class 6A semifinal trying to protect it.
As a result, the Tigers (23-2-1) ended the season for the Bulls (17-7) for the second consecutive season with a 2-1 victory.
"We pressed and pressed and pressed, but we couldn't do it," Bloomingdale coach Susan Peet said.
Capritta Roberts scored for the Bulls.

Freedom falls
TARPON SPRINGS - Tarpon Springs, led by Brandi Bianco's first hat trick of the season, defeated visiting Freedom 7-2.
Fourteen minutes in Freedom keeper Emily Simpson made a point-blank save but Bianco followed through for the deflection rebound and goal.
Bianco scored her second with 20 minutes left, then beat three defenders and Simpson for a third.
Freedom (16-5-1) managed two goals late. Jana Belflower scored on a deflection with 14 minutes to go and Vanessa Rangel hit a penalty kick five minutes later.
