Hot Ticket: Potters' pride

By LENNIE BENNETT
Published February 12, 2004

Fine craft is dedicated to the idea that form can serve itself and its function, and ceramics is one of the best mediums to show off that duality. "The Power of Pottery," an exhibition at Dunedin Fine Art Center, 1143 Michigan Blvd., offers multiple examples of usable art by 33 potters from around the United States and Canada gathered together by guest curator Kevin Hluch, a ceramic artist and professor of art at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md.

Like glass, ceramics lends itself to a multitude of surface treatments, and many of them are deployed in this show to embellish clays from earthenware to porcelain. Two examples, shown above, are a wood-fired casserole dish by Ben Krupka and a teapot with tray by Elizabeth Lurie.

Two additional shows, of Hluch's work and of the center's pottery instructors, are also on view. All run through March 7. (727) 298-3322.
