Farm saddles up for rodeo

Published February 13, 2004

Some of the top cowboys and cowgirls on the rodeo circuit will compete for $25,000 in prize money at the Tampa Bay Championship Rodeo this weekend in Dade City. Bareback bronco, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, barrel racing, team roping and bull riding are on the program.

Tom and Susan Lange, who own the 230-acre farm in east Pasco County, hosted the first rodeo four years ago. Proceeds will benefit Rotary Camp Florida in Brandon, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office Youth Programs and the charter school, the Academy of the Farm located on Lange Farm, which opened in 2002.

In between rodeo events, entertainment will be provided by Rudy Burns, the Crazy Cajun rodeo clown and Blake Goode of Texas, with his Roman-style riding. Goode stands on two horses as he races around the arena doing crowd-thrilling feats.

Burns will be joined by other rodeo clowns who serve dual purposes: entertainment and distraction for the bulls or horses while the cowboys make it to safety.

Other venues on the farm include a small carnival, food and retail vendors, and musical entertainment. No coolers or pets allowed.

WHEN: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Rodeo performances are at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday; a children's rodeo is at noon Sunday, the professionals perform at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Lange Farm, 9633 Handcart Road, Dade City. (352) 588-4733.

COST: $10 in advance, $12 at the gate. Children age 5 and younger admitted free.
