Duke bounces back at archrival

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In the days after a surprising loss at Florida State, Duke coach Gail Goestenkors told reserve Vicki Krapohl to start looking for her shot.

Krapohl and the Blue Devils are happy with the results.

The senior scored a career-high 20 and went 6-for-10 from 3-point range to lead No. 4 Duke over No. 15 North Carolina 89-79 on Saturday.

Alana Beard scored a game-high 31 for the Blue Devils (20-3), who reached 20 victories for the seventh consecutive season.

Krapohl set a career high for the second time in three games since the loss to the Seminoles on Feb. 4. She scored 18 in a rout of Georgia Tech last weekend, but went scoreless in Thursday's win over Wake Forest.

"We have so many great players that they can't stop everything," Krapohl said.

NO. 2 UCONN 66, RUTGERS 43: Barbara Turner outscored Rutgers 12-10 in the first half as the visiting Huskies held the Scarlet Knights to 4-for-27 shooting before intermission. The 10 first-half points allowed were one shy of Connecticut's conference-record low, set in December 2001 against St. John's.

NO. 7 TEXAS TECH 59, TEXAS A&M 58: LaToya Davis rebounded on a missed free throw then scored with four seconds left for the visiting Raiders. Tech trailed 58-55 with 15 seconds left.

NO. 9 KANSAS ST. 89, NEBRASKA 69: Kendra Wecker scored 18 for the host Wildcats, who started the second half 8-for-10 in their sixth consecutive victory.

NO. 11 STANFORD 61, CAL 53: T'Nae Thiel scored 16 for the host Cardinal, which took a half-game lead over idle Arizona in the Pac-10.

MIAMI 65, NO. 21 VIRGINIA TECH 56: Chanivia Broussard had 14 of her 22 points in the second half for the visiting Hurricanes, who won with an 8-0 closing run.

UCF 70, TROY STATE 66: Junior Takira Allen scored 19 to lift the visiting Knights.

BARRY 62, SAINT LEO 58: The visiting Bucs outscored the Lions 8-0 over the final 1:50 to keep them winless at 0-22, 0-10 in the SSC.

NO. 600: North Dakota State coach Amy Ruley got her 600th career win when the Bison beat Augustana (S.D.) 78-73.

TODAY: USF WOMEN VS. UAB

WHEN/WHERE: 1; the Corral, Tampa.

TV: FSN.

RECORDS: UAB 7-16, 1-9 Conference USA; USF 10-13, 3-7.

COACHES: UAB - Jeannie Milling (263-227, 17th season; 423-337 overall); USF - Jose Fernandez (35-70, fourth season).

KEY PLAYERS: UAB - Natasha Thomas, PF, 6-2 Sr. (14.7 ppg, 8.0 rpg); Crystal McFadden G, 5-10 Fr. (13.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg). USF - Jessica Dickson, F/G, 5-11 Fr. (18.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg); Nalini Miller, C, 6-2 Fr. (11.1 ppg, 8.4 rpg); Anedra Gilmore, PG, 5-6 Jr. (7.0 ppg, 5.2 apg, 2.3 spg).

NOTES: One win in USF's final four games likely clinches a berth in the C-USA tournament for the first time since 2001 (when all teams qualified, the year before East Carolina and TCU joined the league). The bottom two teams don't qualify. But the Bulls are aiming for much more: Three of the remaining four games are against teams behind USF in the standings and the next three are at home. Four wins puts USF over .500 and in contention for an NIT berth. Dickson is averaging just under 29 points in the past four games. Her 36 points in a game are a C-USA freshman record, and she is on pace to break all C-USA freshman scoring records (average overall and in league play, total points overall and in league play) and has led the Bulls in points in 15 of 23 games. Both teams have been off for a week. Three freshmen have been starting since G Rachael Sheats joined Dickson and Miller in the opening lineup last month. Sheats is shooting 52.3 percent from the floor. F Ezria Parsons had 13 rebounds Feb. 8 vs. Louisville and is averaging 7.0 in C-USA games. The Bulls play in the Corral, on the west side of the Sun Dome, the final three home games.
