UM baseball evens series with a 4-1 win vs. Florida

CORAL GABLES - Erick San Pedro drove in three runs to lead Miami to a 4-1 win over Florida on Saturday, tying the three-game series at one.
Richard Giannotti and San Pedro accounted for the Hurricanes' five hits as Miami won its first game in two tries.
Vince Bongiovanni (1-0) gave up one earned run on three hits in 52/3 innings to pick up the win. Cesar Carillo pitched two scoreless innings for his first save as the Gators (3-1) were held to five hits.
Steven Porter (0-1) gave up three earned runs in 41/3 innings.
USF 7, E. TENN. ST. 4: Senior right-hander Tim Mattison (1-0) got the win as the host Bulls opened 2-0 for the first time since 1999. Mattison allowed no runs on five hits in 41/3 innings. Freshman centerfielder Ty Taborelli went 3-for-4 with an RBI in his first college start. Freshman Casey Hudspeth of Sarasota got his first collegiate start for the Bulls. He allowed four runs on eight hits in 32/3 innings and struck out six.
S. CAROLINA 38, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 0: The host Gamecocks set school records for hits and margin of victory. They had 35 hits a day after getting seven in a 3-2 win over the Buccaneers. Steve Pearce and Kevin Melillo had two home runs and seven RBIs each for South Carolina, and Brendan Winn hit for the cycle.

FOOTBALL: Richmond coach Jim Reid resigned to become Syracuse's defensive line coach after the Spiders completed their third straight losing season. He went 48-53-1 at Richmond.
SOFTBALL: Most of the first day of the USF-Wilson Tournament was rained out at the USF complex. Michigan State beat Jacksonville 4-3, and USF's game against Michigan State was halted and will continue at 10 a.m. today. Florida plays Michigan State at 1:30 and Seton Hall at 6, and USF faces Jacksonville at 4. ... Tampa beat Florida Tech 3-0 in both teams' opener. ... Megan Brown pitched a five-inning no-hitter and Stephanie Huber homered and had eight RBIs to lead Florida Southern to 8-0 and 12-4 wins over Eckerd.
TRACK: Florida's Josh Walker broke his school record in the 60-meter hurdles and the women's 4x400 team clocked the Gators' third-fastest time (3:33.90) to close out the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. For Miami, Lauryn Williams was fourth in the 60 meters (7.23 seconds), and the 4x400 relay was third (3:34.45) to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 12-13 at Arkansas. ... USF's Chandra Brewer won her fourth straight shot put title with a school-record 52 feet, 6.5 inches at the Clemson Tiger Invitational. In the 3,000, Christa Benton won in 9:59.86. Karoline Hagen won the 400 in 56.41, and the 4x400 team won in 3:47.68.
