PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's stayed undefeated and coach Phil Martelli found something to complain about: the Hawks' effort.
"We demand it from them every single day. We didn't get it today," he said.
It was still enough for win No. 22.
Jameer Nelson scored 20 and Delonte West added 14 and nine assists to help No. 3 Saint Joseph's to a 73-59 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday.
Tyrone Barley had four 3-pointers and scored 14 for the Hawks (22-0, 11-0 Atlantic 10) who extended their school-record winning streak and remain one of two unbeaten teams in Division I.
The Hawks plodded along for most of the first and finished the game outrebounded by 22. Martelli said his team appeared mentally tired during practice on Friday and it seemed to carry over.
The locker room was quieter than it has been most of the season after the players were chewed out by Martelli. His message? Don't get caught up in the expectations and hoopla.
"Everything that's going on can go away with a snap of a finger," said Nelson, bothered by a slightly sprained right shoulder from Friday's practice. "We don't want to let that happen."
VIRGINIA 82, NO. 15 GA. TECH 80: Todd Billet made a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2.4 seconds left - his only field goal - and the desperate Cavaliers upset the visiting Yellow Jackets. Billet, whose minutes were taken by freshman T.J. Bannister most of the game, was on the court in the final minute because of his shooting and he got free with the clock running down for the high-arcing shot. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak.
NO. 6 MISS. ST. 77, ARKANSAS 70: Winsome Frazier scored 23, including four free throws in the final 1:32, for the Bulldogs, who earned its first win at Arkansas in 32 years and improved to 10-0 on the road. Lawrence Roberts had his 13th double double, finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who shot 58 percent.
IOWA STATE 78, NO. 11 TEXAS 77: Jake Sullivan scored 24 and Damion Staple posted the winning basket on a dunk with 1:09 left for the host Cyclones. Iowa State had been blown out in their past three games, but showed resolve this time after trailing 61-47 with 14 minutes to play. It outscored Texas 31-16 the rest of the way.
NO. 10 OKLA. ST. 91, BAYLOR 58: Tony Allen and Ivan McFarlin each scored 14 and John Lucas had 13 in his first game against the school he transferred from last summer. The host Cowboys won their ninth consecutive and took over first place in the Big 12. Terrance Thomas had 16 for Baylor in its worst loss of the season.
NO. 16 ARIZONA 107, UCLA 83: Salim Stoudamire scored a career-high 34 and Andre Iguodala set an Arizona record with his third triple double. Chris Rodgers added 16 and four steals as the Wildcats matched their season scoring high and beat UCLA for the seventh straight time at home. Dijon Thompson had 20 for the Bruins.
NO. 17 WISCONSIN 78, OHIO ST. 48: Devin Harris scored 33 to lead the Badgers to their biggest rout since the series began in 1905. Wisconsin stayed in first place and improved to 22-0 in league home games under third-year coach Bo Ryan. Wisconsin has won 26 consecutive at home with an average margin of victory of 20.5. J.J. Sullinger had 14 for Ohio State.
NO. 18 TEXAS TECH 82, KANSAS STATE 71: Andre Emmett had 26 points and 10 rebounds, his seventh double double of the season, for the host Red Raiders. Kansas State cut the margin to 70-67 with 5:31 left, but Tech went on a 6-0 run with Emmett getting four. Jarrett Hart and Tim Ellis each scored 20 points for the Wildcats.
NO. 23 S. ILLINOIS 59, SW MISSOURI 58: Darren Brooks scored 19 for the visiting Salukis, including the go-ahead 3-pointer. Southern Illinois has won 12 in a row.
NO. 24 PROVIDENCE 61, BC 52: Ryan Gomes had 20 points and 11 rebounds to key an 11-0 run late for the visiting Friars, winners of three in a row and nine of the past 11.
NO. 25 S. CAROLINA 82, VANDY 75: Michael Boynton had a career-high five 3-pointers for the host Gamecocks. Boynton had a swollen abscess removed from his calflast week.
