Cayman Went runs season's best time

Cayman Went clocked the season's fastest time in the three-eighths mile, winning his second straight on the longer course Wednesday at Derby Lane.

Cayman Went recorded a track record Jan.24 over the shorter sprint course in 30.02 and is preparing for the $100,000 Distance Classic starting March 13 and ending March 27. He must race the longer distance twice more to enter the Classic.

Cayman Went's time of 37.19 was .11 seconds off the track record set in 1995 by Awesome Memory. It was Cayman Went's 14th win in 15 starts.

federal judge refused to hear Miami's lawsuit against the Big East and four member schools, sending it back to state court.

Miami sued the conference and league members Connecticut, West Virginia, Rutgers and Pittsburgh in October, claiming it suffered "substantial monetary damages" by remaining in the league.

The Big East moved the suit from Florida Circuit Court to federal court in November, but Miami wanted it heard in state court.

BASEBALL: Florida (4-2) remained undefeated at home with an 11-5 win over FAMU (5-7). C.J. Smith led UF with three hits and four RBIs.

SOFTBALL: Sophomore left-hander Katie Heintz pitched a six-inning no-hitter as Saint Leo University (7-3) completed a sweep of a doubleheader with an 8-0 win over Northwood. Saint Leo won the opener 9-1 in five innings.

JOB CUT: Jacksonville has eliminated the position of athletic director, part of a university-wide realignment designed to reduce a $2.3-million deficit. Hugh Durham, who served as athletic director and men's basketball coach, keeps his coaching duties. All athletic staff will report to Dr. John Balog, VP of student life.

MINORITY AWARD: An award has been established in honor of Fritz Pollard, the first black man to play in a Rose Bowl and coach in the NFL. The Fritz Pollard Award, presented by the Black Coaches Association to a college or pro coach, will be given June5.

Lance Armstrong cruised to the finish line with the lead pack in the opening stage of the Tour of the Algarve in Albufeira, Portugal. The Texan, preparing to go for his record sixth straight Tour de France victory in July, covered the mostly flat 93-mile stage in 3 hours, 27 minutes, 50 seconds, the same time as winner Alberto Benito, though Armstrong placed 82nd.

INVESTIGATION: Italian police said they found cocaine in the hotel room where former Tour de France winner Marco Pantani was found dead of a heart attack and opened an inquiry into who may have caused his death.

Patrick McEnroe was named U.S. Olympic men's coach, and he said at a Manhattan news conference he expects every highly ranked American other than Andre Agassi will make himself available for the team to be selected June 28. Zina Garrison was named the women's coach, and Dan James will coach the paralympic wheelchair team.

ST. JUDE: Sixth-seeded James Blake got past Wesley Moodie 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in the second round in Memphis. Blake faces Joachim Johansson, who beat him last week at San Jose.

DIAMOND GAMES: Kim Clijsters beat qualifier Arantxa Parra 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals at Antwerp, Belgium.

ATP: Guillermo Coria and Nicolas Massu advanced to the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Coria beat Franco Squillari 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, and Massu beat Filippo Volandri 6-2, 6-4.

SOCCER: A 1-0 loss to the Netherlands in Amsterdam dropped the United States to 0-10-1 in Europe over the past five years. ... About 30 fans plan to sue a referee for awarding a last-minute penalty against their team in a Spanish league match in Madrid. The fans want one euro ($1.29) each in damages to make a statement.
