ROTTERDAM, Netherlands - Tim Henman upset top-ranked Roger Federer 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) in the ABN Amro quarterfinals Friday, improving to 6-1 against the Wimbledon champ.
Henman also ended Federer's career-best 16-match win streak, during which he earned the Australian Open title and moved to the No. 1 ranking.
"It's something I really can't explain," Henman said. "I played some really good tennis. He wasn't playing his best and it's important to take advantage of that."
Henman, seeded fifth, faces sixth-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, who topped third-seeded Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. The other semifinal pits defending champion Max Mirnyi against No. 2 Juan Carlos Ferrero.
KROGER ST. JUDE: Second-seeded Mardy Fish of Tampa edged Dmitry Tursunov 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals in Memphis. Fish faces Joachim Johansson, who reached his first semifinal as a pro with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Xavier Malisse. Nicolas Kiefer won 6-3, 6-4 over American Jan-Michael Gambill.
DIAMOND GAMES: Kim Clijsters beat Magdalena Maleeva 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to advance to the semifinals in Antwerp, Belgium. The world No. 2 and home favorite faces Myriam Casanova. Silvia Farina Elia and Karolina Sprem also advanced.
VENUS RETURNS: Venus Williams will play in the Dubai Open, two weeks after pulling out of the Pan Pacific Open in Japan because of an injured right knee. The Dubai Open begins Tuesday.
COLLEGES: UNC recruit charged
Jameson Curry, the most prolific scorer in North Carolina high school basketball history and a UNC recruit, was indicted on multiple drug charges, court officials reported. The former Eastern Alamance High player was indicted Monday on two felony counts each of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, the sale of marijuana and delivering marijuana, according to records filed at the Alamance County Clerk of Courts Office. Despite the indictment, Curry's scholarship to UNC has not been revoked.
BASEBALL: Derrick Smith's eighth-inning run-scoring single broke a 3-all tie and host FSU went on to score five runs in the inning in an 8-3 win over Oral Roberts. ... Host Bethune-Cookman scored six in the ninth inning to edge South Florida 10-9. Sophomore Matt McHargue of Tampa was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Bulls. ... Paul Frietch's two-run homer in the ninth lifted visiting Miami (Ohio) 9-8 over Florida.
GOLF: With his first-round 5-under 66, Oscar Fraustro pushed the host USF men to a tie for first with Jacksonville State at 290, a five-shot lead, in the Dick Wittcoff Invitational.
SOFTBALL: FSU's 35-game regular-season win streak ended with a 2-1 loss to host Jacksonville. Janine Palumbo's bases-loaded single with two outs in the seventh was the winner. The 'Noles won Game 1 3-2. ... South Florida earned its fourth straight shutout, 8-0 over Rhode Island in the first game of the USF-Best Western Tournament, then had a nine-run fourth inning en route to beating Pittsburgh 10-0. USF faces N.C. State at noon today. ... Host Eckerd fell 12-0 in five innings to Nova Southeastern. ... Saint Leo scored two runs and stranded two in the seventh inning as host Tampa held on to win 3-2.

DROPPED SPORTS: SMU dropped its men's track and cross-country teams in a move based on gender equity. The school's board of trustees approved a recommendation from the athletics committee to make the cut. SMU has competed in track and field since 1918, winning three national championships.
CYCLING: Armstrong in back of pack
Lance Armstrong battled wind, rain and mist to finish 55th in the third stage of the Tour of the Algarve in Lagos, Portugal. Armstrong, who goes for a record sixth Tour de France title in July, finished in 4 hours, 36 minutes, 59 seconds and was 74th overall, 25 seconds behind race leader Candido Barbosa.
FEMALE FIRST: Road race world champion Susanne Ljungskog is set to become the first woman to compete in a men's elite race. Ljungskog was invited to compete in the 122-mile Scandinavian Open on Aug. 8 in Stockholm, Sweden. Ljungskog's participation must be approved by the sport's international union, UCI.TRACK AND FIELD: Jones wins two medals
Marion Jones (7.16) finished second to Belgian Kim Gevaert (7.13) in the 60 meters at the Norwich Union meet in Birminham, England, but won the long jump (22 feet, 13/4 inches). Kenenisa Bekele (12:49.60) broke the world indoor record in the men's 5,000, topping the 1999 mark of 12:50.38 set by fellow Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie.

BOXING: The 22-month prison sentence for IBF founder Robert W. Lee was upheld by a federal appeals court. Lee, 70, was convicted in 2000 on criminal charges after prosecutors accused him of manipulating the IBF's ranking system to favor fighters whose promoters paid him bribes.
OLYMPICS: The 2004 U.S. men's basketball team will practice and play an exhibition game in Jacksonville. The team will hold its first practices at the University of North Florida from July 26-30 and play an exhibition vs. Puerto Rico on July 31 at Veterans Memorial Arena. ... American Laura Wilkinson won the 10-meter platform at the Diving World Cup in Athens. The competition serves as a qualifying round for the Olympics.
