Turners capture 2 team wins

Tampa Bay Turners Gymnastics, with strong showings earlier this year in the Lightning City Invitational, Turner Invite and O-Town Classic, traveled to St.Louis for the Feb.13-15 Gymquarters Invitational.

The organization had many top performances, including victories from its Level 4 and 8 squads. The Level 5 and 7 programs finished second. Level 9 took third and Level 10 was fourth.

Cortni Claar and Jeanna Cube were the top Level 4 performers. Claar claimed first on the vault and bars and in the floor exercise and all-around competition. Cube recorded vault, beam and all-around wins and was second on floor and bars. In Level 8, Jamie Applefield was first on vault, floor and all-around and second on bars.

Other Level 4 place-winners were Dannie Edmonds, Casey Pluchino, Keri Linnemeyer, Taylor Salazar, Nathania Beltran, Ivy Hussung, Kaitlan Griffith and Rebecka Hawthorne. For Level 5, Kylie Moran, Jillian Root, McKenzie Smith and Erin Pluchino were the high finishers. In Level 7, it was Sarah Wolford, Mariah Broughton, Alexia Perry, Ashtyn Morgan, Lindsey Brown and Katie Harbin.

Elle Mixa, Morgan Gunning, Nicole Abdo, Mindy Richards and Deni Morgan were the other strong Level 8 performers. In Level 9 competition, it was Ashley Sullivan, Briani Melander, Alyssa Adrian, Alyssa Collins, Sarah Brownlee, Lindsay Weber and Brittany Hunt. Level 10 was led by Alyssa Harmon, Summer Hubbard, Breanne Guy, Jenny Citrin and Lauren Bernloehr.

GEMINI GYMNASTICS: The optional girls team from Oldsmar competed in the Magical Classic at Orange County Convention Center in Orlando on Feb.6-7. The Level 7 and 9 squads topped their competition.

For Level 7, Lauryn Kannard finished first in the all-around category (38.425) and posted wins on the vault (9.600), bars (9.725), balance beam (9.550) and floor (9.550). Sarah Zoldos finished first in all-around (37.675) and on bars (9.625) and was second on floor (9.475) and beam (9.375).

Christina Gunther and Ariana Segal were the other place-winners. Gunther took third on floor (9.350), fourth in all-around (36.250) and fifth on vault (9.250) and bars (9.050). Segal placed second on bars (9.450), third in all-around (35.850) and fifth on vault (9.250).

In Level 9, Joelle Ferguson claimed first in all-around (36.750) and on bars (9.025) and beam (9.375), second (9.000) on vault and third on floor (9.350). Elizabeth Dupell finished second on beam (9.050), third on vault (8.950) and fourth in all-around (35.350) and on floor (9.150). Amy Ferguson placed third on bars (8.775) and beam (9.025). Kaleigh Dickson came in fifth in all-around (35.200) and on vault (8.875), bars (8.600) and floor (9.075).

APOLLO: The Clearwater gymnastics program's AAU Level 4 team and USAG Level 5 and 6 squads captured first in the Florida West Coast Invite on Feb.14. Girls 6-11 placed in the top five in many events.

In Level 4, Rebecca Stewart, 7, posted victories in the all-around competition and on bars, was second in the floor exercise and on balance beam and third on vault. Sienna Davis, 8, finished first in all-around and on the bars, beam and floor and took second on vault.

Sarah Spurgeon, 7, and Kaylen Stine, 9, were second in all-around. Spurgeon won the floor competition and was second on vault and third on bars. Stine placed third on bars and balance beam and fourth on vault and floor. Erin Morrison, 7, took third in all-around, including a second-place performance on bars and third on balance beam. Miranda Frohlich, 6, fourth all-around, finished first on beam, second on bars and third on floor. Jessica Stewart and Katelyn Montagna were first and fourth, respectively, on vault.

In Level 5, Rachel Daniels, Gracie Kobitter and Kassy Kogut recorded all-around victories. Daniels took first on beam and floor and second on bars. Kobitter was second on vault, bars, beam and floor. Kogut was first on bars, second on vault and third on floor. Taylor King came in second in all-around, first on vault and bars and third on floor. Alyssa Sichak and Lucia Russo were third in all-around. Sichak, 11, placed second on bars and floor, and Russo, 9, was first on beam and third on floor and bars. Others placing were Kathryn Stacy (third on bars), Caitlyn Kovach (first on vault) and Kelsey White (first on floor and third on beam).

For the Level 6 team, Taylor Lubecki claimed first in all-around, on bars and beam and second on floor and vault. Molly Nelson was second all-around, first on vault and floor and runnerup on bars. Katie Wolf, 11, finished third in all-around, second on beam and third on bars and floor. Scout McDaniel, 10, took second on bars and third on beam, vault and floor.

ST. PETE AQUATICS: Katlin Frehling was selected the state's 10-and-under swimmer of the year. Megan Romano will compete in the Counsilman Classic USA Swimming Grand Prix Series on April 2-4 at Indiana University.
