At first glance the hillsides in the central plateau of Haiti are beautiful, until one thinks of the deforestation and the trees that once stood above these hills. Small homes dot the region, like this one near the town of Boucan Carre. The roofs, made of banana tree, twigs and old rags may fool the sun, but not the relentless rains.
