Dr. Paul Farmer talks to Dr. Joia Mukherjee, right, at the bedside of cancer patient Marta Cassmand and her father Sanoit Valceus, kneeling. Valceus had cut a tendon in his hand with a machete and was asking Farmer for advice. Valceus' daughter Marta was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that can be cured by a relatively easy regiment of pills - although the drug is worth about $100,000. Like all Partners In Health patients, Cassmand receives her treatment at no cost.
