They have played an 18-inning game. They have played a 14-inning game. They have played measely 12- and 13-inning games. At 4 p.m. Thursday, PHU and Countryside meet again.

When the Class 5A, District 9 rivals meet, it's usually a pitchers' duel. In their last meeting, the 5A-9 tournament final May 2, Countryside's Bree Spence and PHU's Dani Hofer put on a clinic.

They threw 480 pitches to 129 batters, striking out 46 (Hofer 24), and allowed no runs through 17 innings. It finally ended when the Cougars' Nikki Delandy hit a three-run home run.

It took 4 hours, 30 minutes.

Too bad PHU doesn't have lights.
