LOS ANGELES - Lost in Translation and American Splendor took top screenwriting honors Saturday from the Writers Guild of America.

Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, about two lonely Americans who strike up an unlikely friendship in Tokyo, was named best original screenplay. She also directed the film, which stars Bill Murray.

Best adapted screenplay honors went to Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman for American Splendor, which is based on the underground comic books that detail the life of Harvey Pekar and a novel Pekar wrote with his wife, Joyce Brabner.

The 56th annual awards were presented in simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.

"50 First Dates' draws $21-million

LOS ANGELES - Moviegoers have not forgotten 50 First Dates.

The Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore romance about a man wooing a memory-challenged woman took in $21-million to remain the top movie for a second weekend, easily fending off a rush of new flicks, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Lindsay Lohan's girl-power comedy Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen led the weak batch of newcomers, grossing $9.2-million for the No. 2 spot.

Kurt Russell's hockey holdover Miracle, the second-place movie the previous two weekends, slipped to No. 3 with $8-million.

The overall box office tumbled, with the top 12 movies grossing $75.1-million, down 21 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when Daredevil and Old School led the pack.
