CLEARWATER - The new Publix plaza near downtown will soon have one rich neighbor.

SouthTrust bank is planning to build a new branch on the supermarket property, and Publix plaza developer Jim White couldn't be happier. "I think the banks love Publix," said White, who recently sold the Publix property to overseas investors. "I know they do. Publix creates a whole bunch of traffic. It's convenient for people to do their banking and shopping."

Southtrust's marketing administrator, Tina Orluski, did not know the exact opening date or dates of construction. The land is currently vacant and covered with short grass, scraggly weeds and a large sign proclaiming that SouthTrust is coming.

"The Belleair office will be relocating there," said Orluski. "The lease is running out in the Belleair office."

Orluski is fairly certain that a few new jobs will be created in the bank's proposed, one-story building that should complement the nearby Publix's peach hues. The building will feature drive-through banking.

SouthTrust, headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., has 717 branches in nine states. It operates 20 branches in Pinellas County.

"It's a huge draw," said Orluski of the new location. "The downtown Clearwater area is growing with the new building and everything going in. It's in an accessible area for us. The financial center will be easier for our customer."
