Community group plans evening of cool sounds

SPRING HILL - This weekend, members of the Spring Hill Community Association are hoping the sounds of jazz and an evening breeze over the water will draw a crowd.

The group's second annual Night Sounds concert, featuring performances by members of the Hernando Jazz Society, is scheduled for Sunday night and organizers say the turnout should be good.

"This is just a chance to get the community together," said Peggy Hammond, who serves as corresponding secretary for the group. "A lot of people are figuring out where the lake house is and since the property has been spruced up, it's a pleasant place to be."

With the success of the group's December event, Angels on High, Hammond said the community is becoming more familiar with the property on Kenlake Avenue, near the intersection of Spring Hill Drive and U.S. 19.

Over the past several years, the group has done extensive work to tame what was overgrown lakefront property. Lights and a sound system will help make jazz from the stage accessible to those seated along the grassy slope behind the lake house.

Though most of last year's audience was made up of families with young children, Hammond said she expects a fair number of older residents to attend because of the event's early start.

"Even if they don't like to drive after dark, we hope they will at least come and join us for the first set," she said.

Picnic baskets and coolers are welcome, but food and beverage vendors will be on site, Hammond said. She also suggests that visitors bring a lawn chair or blanket.
