PALM HARBOR - Two men were killed early Friday when they lost control and were ejected from their vehicle, which hit a fence and landed in a ditch along Tampa Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Kyles James Tiernan, 25, and Jonathon D. Schuberth, 24, were headed east on Tampa Road in a 2002 Honda about 2:10 a.m. The car rotated clockwise, hit a fence on the south side of Tampa Road near Lake St. George, and came to rest in a ditch on its right side, troopers said.

Troopers were unable to determine whether Tiernan or Schuberth was driving. Both men, the only two in the vehicle, were ejected. Neither had been wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

Tiernan had received three traffic citations in Pinellas County since 1998. This month, he was cited for going 61 mph in a 45 mph zone, court records show. He paid a $122.50 fine and opted to attend the state's defensive driving school.

Schuberth was cited for improper registration tags on a two-door Pontiac in 2002. That car was registered in Virginia, court records show.
