Baylor's fate up to NCAA

WACO, Texas - After a self-examination of a program run amok, Baylor will turn over its findings to the NCAA, which will decide whether the self-imposed sanctions are enough to atone for the misdeeds of former coach Dave Bliss.

The NCAA is under no deadline to address the major infractions acknowledged by the internal investigation. The violations detailed by school president Robert Sloan Thursday included payments to players and efforts to cover up wrongdoing.

The trial of former Bears player Carlton Dotson, charged with shooting roommate Patrick Dennehy, was delayed until Aug.9 to give defense attorneys more time.

NO.17 ARIZONA: Salim Stoudamire will be in the lineup today against Washington State after a one-game suspension.

PURDUE: Center Ivan Kartelo will sit out part of Sunday's game against Wisconsin as punishment for his arrest Sunday in a bar fight.

SMU: Coach Mike Dement was fired after nine seasons without an NCAA Tournament appearance.

USC: Junior guards Errick and Derrick Craven will serve one-game suspensions for separate unsportsmanlike actions in the Feb. 21 game against California.

State

TROY ST. 113, JU 73: Herbert Evans scored 22 and the visiting Trojans (21-5, 17-2) won the top seed in the Atlantic Sun tournament. David Lee led the Dolphins (13-14, 8-12) with 24.

Late Thursday

NO.4 GONZAGA 97, SAN DIEGO 78: Blake Stepp scored 24, all on second-half 3-pointers, for the host Bulldogs (24-2, 13-0 West Coast Conference). Stepp's 3-pointers gave him a school-record 281 for his career. The Toreros (4-24, 1-12) have lost five straight.

Women

USF 70, UAB 61: Jessica Dickson scored 19 to become the third player in Bulls history to reach 500 in a season as South Florida (14-13, 7-7 C-USA) beat the Blazers (9-18, 3-11) on the road for the first time in 14 tries and closed the season with its fourth straight win.

NO.3 DUKE 102, CLEMSON 45: Alana Beard made 11 of 13 shots and scored 28 in her final regular-season home game as the Blue Devils (23-3, 14-1 ACC) handed the Tigers (17-9, 7-8) their worst defeat.
