Daughters of fame bracket new pops season

TAMPA - Lorna Luft, performing songs made famous by her mother, Judy Garland, opens the Florida Orchestra's 2004-05 eight-concert pops series. Another daughter paying tribute to a parent winds up the pops season: singer Monica Mancini performing music of her father, Hollywood composer Henry Mancini.

The orchestra announced programming and guest artists today for next season's pops and coffee concerts.

Other pops headliners include Beatlemania, the Broadway act that impersonates the Fab Four; Marvin Hamlisch, the songwriter-conductor-pianist; and big band leader and saxophone player Larry Elgart. Associate conductor Susan Haig will lead a gospel Messiah for the holidays. Richard Kaufman will return to conduct a pair of programs, including one called "Music of the Islands" with principal percussionist John Shaw and the Tampa Steel Orchestra.

Unlike the masterworks series, which will switch from Friday to Monday nights at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center next season, the pops concerts continue on Fridays in Tampa. There will be five pops programs in 2,500-seat Morsani hall and three in smaller Ferguson Hall. Pops concerts are also at Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.

Haig will be on the podium for all but one of the coffee programs, which have six morning concerts at Mahaffey and three in TBPAC's Ferguson. The same repertoire is also performed at three Sunday matinee concerts at the River Ridge Center for the Arts in New Port Richey. Music director Stefan Sanderling will conduct one program at Mahaffey and River Ridge.

Among the highlights of the morning and afternoon series are programs featuring principal harpist Anna Kate Mackle in French works; concertmaster Amy Schwartz Moretti; Katherine Weintraub, this year's Young Artist Competition winner from Sarasota, in a saxophone concerto; and selections from opera and dance.
