Four Times writers were recognized for outstanding sports reporting in 2003 in judging by the Associated Press Sports Editors last week.
Competing in the largest newspaper category (circulations over 250,000), Gary Shelton was ranked among the top 10 sports columnists in preliminary judging by sports editors from around the nation. Shelton was rated the No. 1 sports columnist by APSE in 1996, and colleague John Romano was rated No. 2 in 2002.
Buccaneers beat writer Rick Stroud ranked among the top 10 in breaking news stories for his coverage of Keyshawn Johnson's deactivation with six games to go in the regular season.
And University of Florida beat writer Antonya English and Deputy Floridian Editor John Barry were rated among the top 10 in project work for their coverage of Ron Zook's first season as Gators football coach.
The final rankings in the writing categories (top five with five honorable mentions) will be determined by newspaper managing editors and announced in several weeks.
The Times Sunday section was recognized as one of the best 20 sections among large newspapers.
