Concussion forces Toliver to exit early

TAMPA - The Storm's thin secondary was depleted further when receiver/defensive back T.T. Toliver suffered a slight concussion during Sunday's 40-37 victory over Philadelphia.

Toliver's head slammed on the turf after he leaped to break up a second-quarter pass intended for Tyronne Jones in the back of the end zone.

Toliver returned during the next defensive series but was limited to one series in the second half.

"I wasn't feeling any better," Toliver said. "So I came out and talked to coach (Tim Marcum) and told him, "I can't go. My head's killing me."'

Toliver was replaced by Shea Showers, who broke up a pass for Jones deep in Storm territory and caught his first two passes of the season.

The concussion was the first for Toliver, who said he felt better after the game. He plans to return for Sunday's game at New Orleans.

"My head hurts," Toliver said. "But other than that, I'm pretty much good."

ON SECOND THOUGHT: Jonathan Ordway started for Del Lee, and Tramain Jones replaced Showers at defensive specialist as the Storm revamped its struggling secondary. Lee was deactivated, allowing Tampa Bay to dress an extra lineman.

SHAKING THE RUST: Mike Black inherited more than Ian Howfield's No. 3 jersey when he replaced Howfield as kicker. He also received the scrutiny that comes with the Storm's most troublesome position.

Black did nothing to quell Marcum's concerns in his first outing, missing an extra point and 22-yard field goal. Another extra point was blocked when Cyron Brown failed to block C.J. McLain.

"I've just got to try to get back in my groove," Black said.

"I'm just happy we won the game because I put us in a bind there at the end."

Asked about Black's performance, Marcum responded, "Next question."

LIKE OLD TIMES: Former Storm receiver/defensive back Keita Crespina, traded to Philadelphia before the season, performed his signature cartwheel after catching a 32-yard touchdown early in the third. GETTING ACQUAINTED: Quarterback Shane Stafford had a chance to chat with Philadelphia president and former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski before the game.

"We just talked, and I told him I was a fan growing up in the Pennsylvania area," Stafford said. "We lived outside Philadelphia, and that was back when the Eagles were really good. So it was just nice to meet him.

"It was a little opportunity for me to say hello to a guy I grew up watching."

STEVIE'S BACK: The No. 20 of former Storm receiver/linebacker Stevie Thomas was retired at halftime. Thomas, Tampa Bay's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, was presented with a framed jersey by owner Woody Kern.

STORM FLURRIES: Philadelphia co-owner Jon Bon Jovi watched from a suite. ... Quarterback Stoney Case and offensive/defensive lineman Emil Ekiyor were inactive.
