SO YOU'RE GOING to the gym to work out? Good for you. But are you fit to be around? Athletic club manager Christopher Fazi, writing in Experience Life magazine, offers these top 10 etiquette tips for the gym:
1) Don't stare. Keep your eyes on your own business.
2) Don't obstruct the view. Try to avoid standing in the direct line of sight for someone lifting weights or using machinery, or between him and the mirror.
3) Don't smell. Bathe and wear deodorant. Don't wear cologne or perfume.
4) Don't leave puddles. Wipe down equipment after use, carrying a towel with you from machine to machine if necessary.
5) Don't leave messes. The drinking fountain is not a spittoon and staffers are not your servants.
6) Unload your weights. Return all weights to the rack when finished.
7) Don't hog equipment. Avoid going over allotted time on cardio machines, and be aware of people waiting for equipment.
8) Don't be late. Show up on time for group fitness classes. Ambling in late is distracting.
9) Don't be loud. Crazed grunts during resistance work impress no one. Leave your cell phone in your locker. When having a conversation, try to keep it between two.
10) Cover yourself. This goes for men and women. Avoid clothing that is too revealing in public areas, and practice some decorum in the locker room.
ARTHRITIS SUFFERERS and their families can learn more about diagnosis, treatment and management of the condition at an all-day seminar March 13.
Sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation, "Take Control 2004" begins with registration at 8 a.m. at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, 105 N Bayshore Drive, in Safety Harbor.
Topics will include the difference between rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, the immune system, medications, diet and alternative therapies.
An estimated one-third of Florida residents deal with the effects of arthritis, which can destroy joint tissue, damage internal organs and deprive sufferers of physical and financial independence.
Seminar tickets are $25 a person and include lunch. For registration and information, call toll-free 1-800-850-9455.
