GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Gunmen shot and killed a well-known adviser to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Gaza City early today, security officials said.
Khalil al-Zaben, 59, was hit by 12 bullets as he left his office in the Sabra neighborhood, officials said.
Al-Zaben published a weekly magazine devoted to Palestinian affairs and human rights. He joined forces with Arafat in the 1960s and served in a number of capacities, including media adviser and personal secretary.
Security officials said they did not know who killed al-Zaben. In recent weeks, Gaza has been rocked by internal Palestinian violence, as rival groups vie for control.
U.S. turns over seven detainees to RussiaMOSCOW - The United States has turned over seven Russian citizens who were being held at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, U.S. and Russian officials said Monday.
Russia has charged the men with illegally crossing borders, mercenary activity and participating in a criminal group. They were captured in Afghanistan and accused of fighting alongside the Taliban.
The detainees were turned over under an agreement reached by Washington and Moscow.
