Fire station plans get preliminary okay

Fire commissioners allow the architect to move on with the interior design, even though they don't vote until March 15.

LEALMAN - Fire commissioners got a glimpse Monday of the site plan for their new fire station.

Although commissioners will not vote on the proposal until their March 15 meeting, they agreed to let architect John Kelly go ahead with the interior building design.

The site plan shows a three-section building facing 54th Avenue N on the eastern side of the railroad tracks.

The building will have space for offices, a meeting room, sleeping quarters and fire trucks.

A second building, for engine maintenance, is on the northwest side of the property. Parking for personnel and visitors is on the north side of the building. It will be accessible from 55th Avenue N.

The rear parking worried Lealman Fire Commissioner Bill Adams, who wanted to have visitor parking in the front of the building, along 54th.

That's the side of the building most people will see, he said, and it's there that folks will pull in if they have an emergency or are visiting the station.

As currently designed, he said, those people will end up in the driveway in front of the fire trucks and could cause a delay or an accident if an engine has to leave on an emergency.
