3 Times employees win national news and photography honors

A business series and two photos win acclaim.

The St. Petersburg Times won two second-place awards and a third-place award in the 70th annual National Headliner Awards, sponsored by the Press Club of Atlantic City, N.J.

In the category of business coverage, Times reporter Sydney Freedberg won third place for "Loophole, Inc," a series of stories about how Florida's tax structure allows most businesses to legally avoid paying corporate income taxes.

In the category of spot news photography for daily newspapers, Times photographer Maurice G. Rivenbark won second place for a picture of two young men comforting one another during a search for a drowning victim in Hernando County.

In the category of sports photography for daily newspapers, Times photographer William Serne won second place for a picture of a jarring tackle of Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Michael Pittman, whose helmet flew off.
