ZEPHYRHILLS - Police Chief Russell Barnes is recovering in the hospital after emergency gall bladder surgery Tuesday morning.

Barnes, 51, said Wednesday he began having pain during a weekend flight from San Diego to Atlanta. The pain got worse through the week, and he checked himself into East Pasco Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon.

Doctors removed his gall bladder Wednesday morning. Barnes said he expected to be able to go home today.
