Know your candidates: Tarpon Springs

THE JOB: Tarpon Springs City Commissioners serve three-year terms and are limited to serving two consecutive terms. The job is considered part time and nonpartisan. Commissioners are paid $8,000 a year. The mayor presides at commission meetings and is paid $13,000 a year. The winners will be sworn into office March 16.

CANDIDATES FOR SEAT 3

PETER DALACOS

AGE: 49

BACKGROUND: A real estate agent and stay-at-home dad, Dalacos is making his first run for political office. He also helps manage his wife's Palm Harbor day spa. A Tarpon Springs native who graduated with a degree in biology from Tulane University, he moved to California after graduating. He studied investing and broadcast production at Santa Monica College and held several different jobs. He also worked as a Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controller in South Florida. He and his wife, Devorah, have two grown daughters and one daughter in elementary school.

CINDY DOMINO-SANNER

AGE: 52

BACKGROUND: Domino-Sanner was born in Chicago. She earned an associate's degree in fashion design at Harper Junior College in Illinois. She worked as a retail buyer and office manager before moving to Tarpon Springs in 1987. Here she worked as a community involvement assistant for the Pinellas County school system. She left that job to work as an executive assistant and then a property acquisition specialist at private businesses. In 1997, she became the local general manager for National Data & Communications Inc., which builds wireless communication towers. She served as a city commissioner from April 1992 to 1998 and then dropped out of city politics for a year. She won a commission seat again and served from 1999 to 2002. She was laid off at her old job at Crown Castle International, a cell phone tower company, and started a home inspection business. Her civic memberships include the Rotary Club and the Philoptochos Society. She is married and has two grown daughters.

CANDIDATES FOR SEAT 4

SPANOS HARDING

AGE: 40

BACKGROUND: He was born in Tarpon Springs. He operates a propane gas business on U.S. 19, a U-Haul rental business and buys and sells real estate. He is a graduate of Tarpon Springs High School. He is a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral and is an assistant coach for a Tarpon Springs Little League team. Harding and his wife, Tina Marie, have a son and two daughters. He has never held elected office, but he ran for a commission seat in 1989, 1998, 2001 and 2003.

PETER KAPSALIS LLOYD

AGE: 54

BACKGROUND: He was born in St. Petersburg and grew up in Tarpon Springs. A graduate of Tarpon Springs High School, Lloyd attended St. Petersburg College for one year but did not graduate. He is a semiretired former stockbroker, part-time financial consultant and private home inspector. He and his wife, Lynn, have two daughters.

PETER NEHR

AGE: 51

BACKGROUND: He was born in Austria and grew up in New York. He has lived in Florida since 1975 and moved to Tarpon Springs 14 years ago. He owns two shops on the Sponge Docks: American Spirit flag shop and Heavenly Angels. Nehr ran unsuccessfully for Pasco County School Board in 1980 and for Pinellas County School Board in 2000. He ran unsuccessfully against City Commissioner Jim Archer in 2002. He has been president of the Beckett Bay Homeowner Association and is a member of the Tarpon Springs Rotary Club, Tarpon Springs Masonic Lodge, Egypt Shriners and the Tarpon Springs Historical Society. He is on the board of directors of the Upper Pinellas Republican Club. Nehr is a 2000 graduate of the University of South Florida and attended St. Petersburg College. He is married and has three grown sons.

CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR

BEVERLEY BILLIRIS

AGE: 56 BACKGROUND: A naturalized American citizen, Billiris was born in Toronto, Canada, and moved to Tarpon Springs more than 20 years ago. She was first elected to City Commission in 1998 and won again in 2001. She resigned her commission seat in December 2002, sitting out for a year in order to run for mayor. A former elementary schoolteacher, Billiris now runs a Sponge Docks curio shop, import-export business and a tour company. She earned a bachelor of science in education degree from the University of South Florida and a master's degree in computer science from Nova University. She is a member of the Tarpon Springs Rotary Club and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She and her husband, George, have no children.

LIABILITIES: Mortgage.

INCOME: Mortgage Businesses and stocks.

ANITA PROTOS

AGE: 61

BACKGROUND: Born in West Virginia, Protos has lived in Tarpon Springs for all but the first two weeks of her life. She was the city's first woman mayor. A graduate of Tarpon Springs High School, Protos was first elected to the City Commission in 1982 and served as a commissioner until 1990. She was mayor from 1990 to 1998. She is a member of the Tarpon Springs Historical Society, the Rotary Club and Tarpon Springs Women's Club. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Tarpon Springs Boys and Girls Club. A widow with a grown daughter, Protos has worked for the Lazenby Eye Care Center, a Pasco County ophthalmologist for nearly 30 years.

INCOME: Ophthalmologist office work, investments, trust and retirement funds.
