Saturday morning companion

TheImaginaryWorld.com/cbarch.html

Ever scarfed down a plate of Booberry or Freakies cereal? Did the psychological trauma from staring at the cartoon characters on the boxes ever leave? While this site might not help you discover those answers, it might rekindle some old memories and help push your therapy back a few years. This can't-stop-looking train wreck of a site is my new kitsch favorite and features cereal packet fronts, backs and inserts.

Illustrated stealing

www.uTexas.edu/admin/utpd/atm.html

Most of us are at least familiar with identity theft and the cloning of ATM cards. If you've ever wondered how such a thing is possible, this page is for you. Apparently the bad guys install a wireless swipe card reader over the real one that's built into the ATM. Then they attach a small video camera to record the keystrokes while you enter your PIN number. It's real spy gadget stuff brought to you by the University of Texas police department.

Movies and physics

Hollywood was built around the idea that escapism is a good thing. So leave it to a pesky bunch of science nerds to spoil the fun by explaining why bullets don't really make sparks when they hit something. And don't even get started on the visible laser beam thing or they'll be picketing outside your house before you can get the next DVD in the player. On a practical note, there's a small section for educators on mixing the fun concept of movies with the less fun concept of physics. It's excellent stuff, if not a little dry.

Get your kicks

I have the travel bug. I'm itching to go to Japan, Hong Kong, Russia and the South Pole. Given my dogged determination for whining until I get my way, it's possible I'll see them all. But what to do when you get there? That's a question that's best answered by locals and frequent fliers who contribute to sites such as this one. It claims to have 40,000 articles on 10,000 possible destinations. So I have a lot of reading to do.

Tube art

London has an extensive rail system and, for the most part, it works. When it doesn't, you're really out of luck. You'll have to read what you brought on the train or stare at the ads and system map. (Brits don't talk to each other on the trains.) The latter has to be where the inspiration for this site originated. It's quite inventive and matches patterns within the map of the Underground to look like animals.
