SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Gerry McNamara finally said goodbye to that Connecticut jinx, and so did the Orangemen.
In their run to the national title last year, the Orangemen were badly beaten twice by UConn and again lost to the Huskies in February 84-56. And each time McNamara shouldered most of the blame, going a combined 4-for-33 for 15 points in the three games.
That all changed Sunday. McNamara scored 24 and Craig Forth had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 24 Syracuse to a 67-56 victory over the No. 7 Huskies.
"I've been waiting for this one," said McNamara, who hit four 3-pointers. "UConn has had my number."
It was the fifth straight win for Syracuse (21-6, 11-5) and prevented the Huskies (24-6, 12-4) from tying Pittsburgh for the regular-season Big East championship.
UConn center Emeka Okafor played with obvious back pain and finished with nine rebounds and a season-low two points, taking two shots in 32 minutes.
"I was just trying to go out and get a win," said Okafor, who leads the nation with 19 double doubles. "I wanted to get a regular-season championship and try to end the regular season the right way."
