State Road 54 widening passes another milepost

ODESSA - Commuters traveling on State Road 54 were in for a pleasant surprise on Monday. The stretch of road from Gunn Highway to the Suncoast Parkway finally opened.

The roughly $9.8-million project widened Pasco's main east-west thoroughfare from two lanes to six with a grass median. The project started in November 2002 and was supposed to be completed last week.

Though the road is now open to the public, work crews still have to apply a final striping coat, but that is likely to be done at night and is not expected to result in any detours.

The next section of the SR 54 widening project - from the Suncoast Parkway to U.S. 41 - is slated to be finished in late April.
