VOORHEES, N.J. - The Flyers shook up their defense Monday, acquiring Vladimir Malakhov from the Rangers and trading Chris Therien to the Stars.

"Malakhov is much better with the puck and a better skater," Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said. "He can do things for the team that Chris couldn't."

Philadelphia sent prospect Rick Kozak and a second-round selection in the 2005 draft to the Rangers for Malakhov, then dealt Therien to Dallas for a pair of draft picks.

The Flyers got an eighth-round pick in the 2004 draft and a third-round choice in 2005 for Therien. The deal will be finalized as long as Therien passes a physical today, the league trade deadline.

Malakhov, 35, and Therien, 32, could become unrestricted free agents on July 1. Malakhov makes $3.5-million this season, Therien $2.5-million.

Malakhov recently missed about three weeks because of a sprained wrist, but he's healthy again. In 56 games, he has three goals and 15 assists.

CAPS TRADE CARTER: Anson Carter's second stint with Washington lasted as long as his first one. After just 19 games since rejoining the Capitals in the deal that sent Jaromir Jagr to the Rangers, Carter was dealt to Los Angeles for forward Jared Aulin. Carter also played 19 games with the Capitals in 1996-97 before being traded to Boston as part of the deal that brought Adam Oates to Washington.

ISLANDERS-PENGUINS: The Islanders acquired Steve Webb from Pittsburgh for defenseman Alain Nasreddine.

PANTHERS: Florida traded defenseman Kyle Rossiter to Atlanta for center Kamil Piros and sent Marcus Nilson to Calgary for a second-round pick in this year's draft.

WILD-SABRES: Minnesota sent defenseman Brad Brown to Buffalo with a sixth-round pick in the 2005 draft for the Sabres' fourth-round choice next year.

SHARKS: Forward Marco Sturm had surgery on his broken left leg and dislocated ankle and will miss the rest of the season.

Monday's games

SENATORS 4, CAPITALS 1: Peter Bondra is used to hearing cheers from Capitals fans. Sitting on the visiting bench in Washington will take a while to get used to.

Bondra, the Capitals' career scoring leader, had no points but was showered with cheers of "Let's Go Bondra" and "We Want Bondra" throughout visiting Ottawa's win.

The popular veteran was in his 13th season with Washington before being dealt Feb.18 for forward Brooks Laich and a second-round pick.

"It was a little bit different than a usual game," Bondra said. "I tried to prepare as if it was any other game, but it obviously wasn't."

HURRICANES 4, BLUE JACKETS 1: Aaron Ward had two goals in his first game back for visiting Carolina after missing 19 games with a wrist injury. It was Ward's first career two-goal game. He came in with one this season and 23 in seven years in the league.

AVALANCHE 9, CANUCKS 2: Milan Hejduk had a hat trick for visiting Colorado, which lost forward Steve Moore in the third period. Moore was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being jumped from behind by Vancouver forward Todd Bertuzzi midway through the third period of a game the Avalanche led 8-2. Moore delivered the hit last month that knocked Canucks captain Markus Naslund out for three games with a concussion.

CANADIENS 5, MIGHTY DUCKS 2: Visiting Montreal scored three times in the third to break open a close game despite being outshot 38-24.
