TAMPA - A bicyclist was struck by a 1991 black BMW Tuesday evening as he pedaled along Bayshore Boulevard, the scenic but busy stretch that has received much attention in the weeks after a jogger was struck and killed there.

Robert Wayne DeCosta, 41, was cycling south on Bayshore north of Rubideaux Street when the BMW driven by Colin Campbell Roberts of 3107 W Bay Villa Ave. hit him from behind, throwing DeCosta off the bike and onto the hood of the car, police said.

Police said DeCosta, who landed on the ground and sustained minor injuries, was in the proper bicycle lane, but did not have the required lights on his Trek racing bike.

DeCosta, of 3406 Cherokee Ave., was charged with failing to have proper lights on his bicycle.

The accident occurred on the same day police charged Brandon resident William R. Napier with felony vehicular homicide in a crash that killed jogger Melissa McKenzie five weeks ago.
