LAKELAND - Darius Washington scored 29 to lead Orlando Edgewater to its first state title in 28 years with a 72-51 win over South Miami in the Class 6A boys state championship Saturday.
Orlando Edgewater (29-2) began the game with a 12-2 run and never looked back, leading the rest of the way.
It did not help that South Miami (21-8) lost 6-foot-11 center Abdul Herrera late in the first quarter with an injured knee.
Herrera had 10 points and 15 rebounds in South Miami's semifinal win against Olympic Heights.
Down 45-21 at the half, the Cobras did not get closer than 13 points.
Xavier Dawson led South Miami with 22 points, and Brian Asbury added 20.
Edgewater was a state runnerup last season after falling in the semifinals the year before.
The loss was South Miami's second runnerup finish since 1996.
