NEW PORT RICHEY - In the 1996-97 seasons, the Fellowship Baptist Academy pulled off a double double by winning state titles in flag football and boys basketball.
The Eagles just pulled off a second double double.
The New Port Richey Christian school defeated Ruskin Christian 56-51 on March 5 for the Florida Christian Activities Association state championship. That followed the football team's state crown in November, a 23-17 win over Ruskin Christian.
"It's very unusual," Eagles basketball coach Tim Boone said, alluding to the double double as well as the same opponent in the title tilts.
Fellowship Baptist Academy (15-3) trailed Ruskin Christian by 10 at halftime and led by a point with 30 seconds left.
"I told them, "You've got some unfinished business,"' Boone said of his pregame pep talk.
A Brad Zenz free throw and three by Thomas Gordon clinched it.
"Oh man, it's just phenomenal," Boone said, recalling the game. "We had a special group of kids."
Gordon scored a team-high 29 in the final and Zenz had 17.
The Eagles went 3-0 in the states series, including wins against Hillsborough Christian (60-48) and Miami Grace Christian (63-42).
Gordon scored 30 against Miami Grace and Zenz led three Eagles with double figures in the Hillsborough game. Zenz had 17, Justin Cooper 16 and Gordon 13 against Hillsborough.
Aside from the state title, Boone took pride in another award won by his team, the Christian Character award as chosen by the state tournament referees.
ROLLER HOCKEY CHAMPS: Sportzone's 10-and-under team won a division title and its 12-and-under team reached the final last month in the East Coast Hockey Organization tournament.
The Scorpions defeated Team Phat Tape 5-3 in the 10-and-under final. David Cross scored twice and teammate Timmy St. Pierre netted the winning goal.
St. Pierre, Dustin Disbro and Cory Piscitelli each had three assists in that game.
Sportzone went 4-0 in the tourney with Dominic DeSimone posting three shutouts to win the Most Valuable Goalie award.
In the 12-and-under title game, the Pro Joy Predators edged Sportzone 6-5 in a shootout following overtime.
Cory Miller, Joey Campanelli, David Dillon, Pat Trice and Logan Sowder, that division's most valuable player, scored for the Scorpions.
