COLUMBIA, S.C. - The NCAA indefinitely extended its ban on awarding championships to South Carolina for flying the Confederate flag on Statehouse grounds.
NCAA spokesman Jeff Howard said Tuesday that the August 2001 decision for a two-year moratorium called for "significant change" from the state. That has not occurred, he said.
The NCAA executive committee had voted for a ban on selecting sites in South Carolina for sports events, such as basketball championships.
PITT DEATH: A county judge ruled that Rev. Henry Krawczyk can be tried for involuntary manslaughter in the death of Billy Gaines, a Pitt football player who fell through the ceiling of a church while drunk last year.
SOFTBALL: Florida State swept visiting Troy State 11-2 (in six innings) and 6-2.
LSU TO BE FETED: Louisiana State's national champion football team will visit President Bush at the White House March 23.
RULES FOR AGENTS: Sports agents representing student-athletes in Wisconsin will have to be licensed and regulated by the state. A bill signed by Gov. Jim Doyle sets standards for conduct, basic contract terms and criminal penalties for violations.
AUBURN AD TO QUIT: Auburn athletic director David Housel, who came under fire for a secret expedition to interview a football coach, announced he will step down in January 2005 though his contract runs through June 2008.
