Seavey has a 1:45 lead on the last Iditarod leg to Nome

WHITE MOUNTAIN, Alaska - Mitch Seavey held on to his lead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Tuesday, the first musher to reach the White Mountain checkpoint 77 miles from the Nome finish line.
Teams are required to rest for eight hours at the next-to-last checkpoint.
Seavey arrived at 4:45 a.m. and has a lead of 1 hour, 45 minutes on three-time winner Jeff King. Norway's Kjetil Backen is another 11 minutes behind.
Seavey lost 52 minutes after he left the Golovin checkpoint when he became convinced he was on the wrong trail and went back to the checkpoint to make sure he was on the right one.
GOLF: Tiger to "enlist'
Playing in the Masters might seem like a vacation compared to what Tiger Woods has planned after his week at Augusta National - training with the Army. Woods said he will take part in four days of military training at Fort Bragg, N.C., before hosting a junior golf clinic April 16 at the army base. His father, Earl, was a Green Beret. "It's an honor to walk in my father's footsteps by training with the service men and women at Fort Bragg," Woods said.
TENNIS: Federer, Davenport win
Top-ranked Roger Federer, Juan Ignacio Chela and Lindsay Davenport advanced to the Pacific Life Open's quarterfinals at Indian Wells, Calif., by winning in straight sets. Federer ran his record for the year to 19-1 with a methodical 6-4, 6-1 victory over Tampa's Mardy Fish. Chela defeated Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-2. Former No. 1 Davenport, back at full strength after fighting injuries the past three years, beat Meghann Shaughnessy 6-1, 6-3.
SERENA'S RETURN: Serena Williams expects to play her first match since winning Wimbledon at the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami next week. She had surgery on her left knee Aug. 1. ... World's No. 2 Kim Clijsters said on her Web site she could miss up to six weeks with a torn tendon in her left wrist.

OBITUARY: Sidney L. James, who served as the founding editor of Sports Illustrated during a 40-year career with Time Inc., died at age 97 in Alameda, Calif.
