ST. LEO - Junior college players auditioning for scholarships from four-year schools and high school prospects out to ply an offer from any school shared the court Saturday.

The Florida Community College All-Star game capped a daylong series of exhibitions at Saint Leo's Marion Bowman Activities Center.

Sophomore shooting guard Zach Ingles, the only Pasco-Hernando Community College player in the all-star game, was on the winning team. The South, comprised of the Suncoast and Southern conferences, defeated the North (Panhandle and Mid-Florida) 118-105.

Ingles, the state's second-leading scorer who had a school-record 44 points in a game this season, had three points, three rebounds and two assists.

"He'll definitely go on (to a four-year school)," said PHCC coach and athletic director Bobby Bowman. "He kind of wanted to showcase himself as a combo guard."

PHCC sophomores T.J. Bishop, Marvin Davis, Stephen Howard and Eric Southward (Pasco) also helped their causes in scrimmages, Bowman said.

HALL CALL: The newest members of the Saint Leo Hall of Fame include four from the college and one from the preparatory school. All five will be inducted at Friday's banquet at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.

College athletes Steve Boyle (soccer, 1994-98), Matt Gifford (baseball, 1994-98), Geoff Chisolm (soccer, 1993-95, '97), Marty Leach (baseball, 1978-81); and Saint Leo Prep's Jose Bolivar (basketball, track, football, 1940-44) will be inducted.

WINNING ON FRONT END: For the second time this season, Saint Leo pitcher Danny Hawkins opened a three-game series against a Sunshine State Conference foe with a win.

Hawkins (3-1) scattered nine hits, struck out six and walked five in Saturday's 5-4 win against Tampa, then the nation's top-ranked team in Division II. Earlier this season, the 6-foot-4 right-hander pitched in a 5-4 win over 10th-ranked Barry.

Graham Taylor (Zephyrhills) earned his first save vs. Tampa. The Lions (14-10, 3-3 in the conference) went 3-3 last week.

Saint Leo banged out 24 hits in a 17-7 win over St. Joseph's (Ind.) on March8. Julian Davis, Chris Germano and Mike Stepp each homered and Davis, Germano and Sean Vanguilder had three RBIs apiece.

Saint Leo edged Northern Kentucky 5-4 on March 9 with Brooks Boyette (Zephyrhills) homering.

STARTER LOST: Senior centerfielder Alena Gerrell dislocated her collarbone on the Saint Leo softball team's road trip to Florence, Ala. She was injured on a slide into second base in a loss to North Alabama and is out for the season.

Gerrell was hitting .299 and led the team with 16 stolen bases. She had 10 walks and had made just one error.

The Lions (20-15) went 5-5 on the road trip, highlighted by Katie Heintz's third no-hitter this season. Heintz had 13 strikeouts and a walk in a 4-0 win over Albany State on Saturday.
