South Florida defensive end Terrence Royal and former USF player Shelly Houston, ex-roommates who were banned from the campus residence halls last month after a stolen computer was found in their room, were cited Saturday for trespassing in a residence hall area.
Royal was not arrested at the time because he was with his 2-year-old daughter, university police spokesman Michael Klingebiel said. However, Klingebiel said a trespassing charge was filed with the state attorney's office.
"(If Royal had been arrested) we'd have had to find child care," Klingebiel said. "It was a family consideration and the discretion of the (officer)."
Royal, a starter for the Bulls, was put on probation last month by Student Judicial Services, which allowed him to remain with the team. USF began spring practice Tuesday, and coach Jim Leavitt said Royal left practice early to attend class.
"Nobody has told me Terrence has been arrested, so I'm going on the assumption he's not arrested," Leavitt said. "I don't know what I'm going to do. If I'm told he was arrested, I'll react to it, I'll respond."
Leavitt said he had not spoken with Royal about the matter and was uncertain if he would today.
Houston, a former starting offensive lineman, also was charged with possession of stolen property, a DVD player. It is the fourth time since the fall Houston has been charged or investigated in a theft. Multiple charges from each of his first two arrests were dropped. He has not been with the team since his first arrest in September and left school last month.
Houston and Royal were in a vehicle driven by Dewayne Michal Pearson, who played football with Royal at Wharton High but not at USF. Pearson was charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license and possession of marijuana.
