GULFPORT- Things had been going well for Boca Ciega.
The Pirates started the season winning more games than they had lost and thought the good play would carry over into a matchup with the best team in their district: Seminole.
Not so. The Warhawks dominated in a 15-0, five-inning win over Boca Ciega (6-3) Wednesday.
"I expected the game to be reasonable," Bogie coach Mary Drayton said. "Maybe 3-1, not 15-0. I didn't expect that."
Seminole (10-1) was able to play pretty much everyone on its roster. Natalie Bale and Alex Koronkiewicz shared pitching duties while the Warhawks' No.1 ace, Lisa Hasson, rested on the bench.
"It's always good to get the girls who practice every day involved in the game," Seminole coach Mark DeRuzzo said.
The Warhawks posted six runs in the first inning. Sophomore Alison Savarese hit a home run in the third, driving in two runs and pushing the Warhawks' lead to 13-0. When Koronkiewicz replaced Bale in the fourth, she struck out four of the eight batters she faced.
Drayton said she could see the apprehension in her players during warmups.
"For some reason, when my kids hear "Seminole,' they shake in their boots," Drayton said. "They were intimidated."
The Pirates are young - just two seniors, with the rest freshmen and sophomores - and nothing Drayton said could get them pumped up for the game. Freshman Christina Hughes pitched for Bogie. It was her first loss.
The teams will meet again in the first game the Dunedin Invitational on Friday.
