While Florida schools have played for state soccer titles since 1979, Berkeley Prep has played since the early 1960s.
Dave Zimmerman, in his 29th year there, developed a love for the game while playing at Fort Union Military Academy in Virginia.
He went to the University of Tampa when it had a club team and helped persuade it to make it an NCAA sport.
He played on the inaugural team before coming to Berkeley.
Berkley Prep went 28-1-1, its only loss being 3-2 to Class 6A semifinalist Bloomingdale in the Student Sports semifinals.
"This year was so special because of the accumulation of a group of players all being together for 3-5 years, their respect and camaraderie for each other and their maturity," Zimmerman said. "It all came together. You couldn't have scripted it any better."
