Rally for troops planned

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 19, 2004

In the past year, Peggy Chiasson has noticed support for American troops fluctuate. So the mother of a U.S. Marine decided to do something about it. Chiasson founded Operation Shoebox, a group that sends care packages to U.S. troops in the Middle East. On Saturday, that group, the Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association and the Lutz Patriots will hold a rally in Lowry Park.

The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with members of the Bayshore Patriots waving flags along Sligh Avenue. Then from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lowry Park, donations will be collected for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chiasson says needed items include nutritional bars, beef jerky, canned food, toiletries and letters. The Lutz Patriots are seeking school supplies, teddy bears and soccer balls to be sent to Iraqi schools.
