UF fourth in NCAA swimming

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Vipa Bernhardt was third in the 200 breaststroke and Sara McLarty fourth in the 1,500 freestyle, helping Florida finish fourth to Auburn at the NCAA swim championships.

Tiffany Manning took fifth in platform diving, Emma Dutton was eighth in the 200 breaststroke and Florida State's team finished 17th.

Auburn's Kirsty Coventry set an NCAA meet record in the 200 backstroke, and the Tigers won their third straight team title. Georgia was second and Arizona third.

It was the first individual title for Coventry, who beat out three-time NCAA swimmer of the year Natalie Coughlin of California. Coughlin had never lost a race in college and was 11-0 in championship competition.

Stanford senior Tara Kirk emerged as a serious Olympic threat late Friday after a record-setting day.

Kirk became the first woman to break 65 seconds in a short-course pool in winning the 100 breaststroke in a world-record time of 1 minute, 4.79 seconds.

BASEBALL: Devin Ivany and Brian Baisley both had four RBIs as host USF (16-6, 2-0 C-USA) posted an 18-10 victory against Cincinnati (3-14, 0-2). ... Ryne Malone hit a grand slam for the second straight day, and host Florida State (19-5, 2-0 ACC) beat Maryland (9-9, 0-2) 10-1. ... Brian Leclerc had a sacrifice fly and Adam Davis a run-scoring single, but host Florida (19-5, 1-1 SEC) left 11 on base in losing 8-2 to Arkansas (15-7, 1-1). ... Jim Burt hit two home runs and finished with four RBIs to lead host Miami (18-4) to a 6-4 victory over Illinois-Chicago (7-6). ... Rollins (26-3, 4-0 Sunshine State) swept visiting Tampa (23-9, 5-4) 4-1, 8-0.

GOLF: UF sophomore Matt Every shot 5-under 67 and was in third place, helping Florida to second place (570) behind Wake Forest (569) after two rounds at the Schenkel E-Z Go Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga. ... Oscar Fraustro was in second place, and USF was tied with Wichita State, nine shots behind Eastern Kentucky at the El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Springs.

SOFTBALL: Holly Groves homered and broke Carmela Liwag's school season RBIs record with her 56th, and Tiffany Stewart homered as host USF (33-7, 3-2 C-USA) swept Southern Miss 6-3 and 5-3. ... Stacey Stevens improved to 9-1 and Jenny Gladding 13-2 as UF (27-3, 4-1 SEC) extended its winning streak to eight in sweeping visiting Arkansas 3-1 and 7-2. ... Jessica van der Linden (16-3) allowed only a bloop single as FSU (34-4) downed Fresno State (24-10) 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Kia Classic in Fullerton, Calif. ... Jamie Elam's two complete games led Rollins (28-9, 5-1 SSC) to a sweep of host Tampa (19-6, 7-5) 3-0 and 6-5. ... Saint Leo sophomore Katie Heintz pitched a two-hitter in a 3-0 victory to complete a sweep of West Florida. The Lions (22-15) also won 4-3.

TENNIS: The host South Florida (10-3) men won the battle of USFs, sweeping San Francisco 7-0. ... The Illinois (15-0) men won their 46th consecutive dual match, downing host FSU (9-6) 5-2.

TRACK AND FIELD: Antonio Emperator won the hammer throw and Chip Heuser the pole vault for UF at the Florida State Relays. ... Jaydian Miller set a USF record in the long jump at 24-8 5/16 at the Florida State Relays. Jimmy Baxter won the high jump. Amber Delpino finished second in the 400 hurdles. ... The Miami women's 400 relay team of Chinela Davis, Wianda Moore, Dominique Darden and Lauryn Williams set meet and stadium records in 44.17 seconds at the Hurricane Invitational. Sophomore Terrell Walden set a meet record in the 100 meters, winning in 10.43 seconds.

WRESTLING: Matt Gentry gave Stanford its first individual NCAA champion, and Oklahoma State wrapped up its second straight team title in St. Louis.
