VILLANOVA, Pa. - Allan Ray scored 23 and Randy Foye added 21 as Villanova beat Virginia 73-63 in a second-round game Saturday.
The Wildcats (18-16), who are making their fifth straight appearance, have won four of their last five games and play the winner of Monday's Rutgers-West Virginia game.
Virginia (18-13) was led by Gary Forbes, who scored 19 off the bench and Elton Brown, who scored his 13 in the second half. The Cavaliers were in their fourth NIT in five years; they have not advanced past the second round.
Villanova led by as many as 17.
The Cavaliers, who made 13 3-pointers in a first-round win over George Washington, were only 1-of-10 from 3-point range Saturday and did not make a 3-pointer until Derrick Byars hit one at 5:15 to cut Villanova's lead to 56-50.
The Cavaliers pulled within 63-59 with 1:30 left but Foye hit a pullup jumper. Will Sheridan had a block and a steal in the final minute and Foye made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch.
TEXAS A&M: Texas-El Paso coach Billy Gillispie likely will be named as the Aggies' next coach by Tuesday at the latest, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
A&M athletic director Bill Byrne has received permission from UTEP athletic director Bob Stull to interview Gillispie.
Byrne is said to be particularly focused on sideline demeanor, language and the relationship with players. Gillispie is an intense sideline coach who seldom sits, but does not berate players, a quality to which Byrne is sensitive.
DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP: Jason Kalsow hit a turnaround, fall-away 15-footer with two-tenths of a second left and Wisconsin-Stevens Point beat Williams 84-82 in Salem, Va. Defending champion Williams, the Williamstown, Mass., college seeking its 20th consecutive victory and 10th in a row in the tournament, hit 10 3-pointers in the second half, but came up short from in close in the final minute. Kalsow tied it on a drive with 1:18 left. Neither team led by more than five in the last 10 minutes.
