AmSouth meeting to be in Tampa

AmSouth Bancorp is the fifth-largest bank in Florida and in the Tampa Bay market. The Alabama bank counts on Florida for nearly $7-billion in deposits, and 2,800 of its employees call the Sunshine State home.

So AmSouth decided it was about time to show Florida its due by holding its annual meeting April 15 in Tampa.

It marks the first time the regional bank has held an annual meeting outside its Birmingham, Ala., headquarters since going public in 1971.

"We've got more branches now in Florida than in any other state and thought it was fitting to hold the meeting in a state that's such a focus of our internal growth," bank spokesman Rick Swagler said.

AmSouth's state headquarters and more than a third of its Florida employees are in Tampa.

The annual meeting will be held at the Wyndham Harbour Island Hotel beginning at 10 a.m.
